Suraj Ka satva ghoda
A movie about love or a canvas of human emotions. The whole movie is in a flash back mode and the men characters in the movie are either leaches like Amrish Puri's Maheshwar Dalal or spineless men like Rajat kapor's manek babu or the young Tanna. (not sure what is the actors name)
The three women around whom the story is written are very strong characters clear about their emotions their goals and willing to go extra mile to achieve it. Be it Jamuna or lily or satti. All the woman characters are very well writtenand well enacted by rajeshwari, pallavi and Nina gupta. The men characters donot have the gumption to give courage and drive to their love. The scene where Jamuna hugs Tanna and all Tanna can do is to try to get out of her arms. He is afraid of the society his father and his fear to cross the social walls.
Rajat Kapoor makes his debut in the movie and he brings a unique charm to a character which doesnot have a lot of spine. He is able to convey the emotions and human frailities and is still able to gain audience empathy. Only man with Spine is the leach Maheshwar dalas who has been potrayed so effectively on screen by Amrish puri.
The movie doesnot follow the logical sequence of story telling seen normally in Hindi movies. It goes back and forth between various events told as different stories by Manek babu. The story is told by two narrators whose roles are not given a lot of importance. The story switches between fiction and reality and leaves the audience to decipher. The common theme is conected together like dots on a paper with lines woven criss crossing across deffirent story lines.
All characters excel in the movie as can be expected in a Shyam benegal movie. It is not very slow paced though not fast too. It holds your attention till the end and many an story is left open for the audience to draw inference be it Jamuna's pregnancy or Satti's disappearance. Music by Vanraj bhatia is very good especially the background score.If you are a fan of good movies/literature/non-linear style stories and dont mind off beat movies, check out the movie
